Pretty much every mom I have ever met dreams of having a mudroom, and it’s no wonder. Maybe it isn’t the most luxurious of spaces, but it is a space that helps contain the chaos of every day. The mudroom is where the shoes come off, the backpacks get stored, the umbrellas go to dry off, and the coats and jackets (hopefully) get hung up. But what is the perfect mudroom?
Every mudroom in every home is different. And every family will use the mudroom in different ways. Here are some important things to consider when deciding how to create a mudroom space in your home:
1. Price- Your budget will play a very important role in determining how you create your mudroom. Is there room in your budget for specialty built-in cabinets? Or to remove or build walls? As with most spaces in your home, it is important to make the best space you can while remaining within your budget.
2. Space- How much room do you have to work with? Most of us cannot simply expand our homes to add mudroom space, so it is important to work within the space you already have. For some, that might mean adding a bench and some coat hooks along a wall or in a corner near your door. For others, you may have an entire room or hallway to utilize. What type of mudroom you build will at least partially determined by the space available.
3. Residents- How many people will be using the space? Will separate spaces improve the function of your mudroom? In my home, I built cubbies, one for each family member. That way, they are each responsible for their space, and they will find their items better because they know where to look (assuming they actually put things away the way they are supposed to!).
4. Use- Consider if you need the mudroom space to be shared with other household spaces? My mudroom is also my laundry room and where my dog sleeps. Do you need to store lots of shoes, sports equipment, or hats and need lots of shelves or bins? Do you need to have a spot to hang dressy coats that shouldn’t be on hooks? Do you need the space to look extra tidy (perhaps it will be visible from a work space or the front door) and need to use cabinets and lockers with doors to hide the chaos? First determine what you need most from the space and then work from there to determine how to best make that space provide those functions.
Once you determine what you need, for how many, and how much space and budget you have, you will be ready to get started creating one of the most used spaces in your home. And remember, your mudroom doesn’t have to be the largest or most perfect. It just has to function well for you, your family, and your home.
